The monk Zendō is a founding figure of Pure Land Buddhism, whose teachings originated in China and then spread to Japanese traditions. According to Pure Land Buddhism, all people, no matter how good or bad, can be reborn in the Pure Land by following and reciting the name and vows of Amitabha. The 3 miniature buddhas next to Zendō’s head in the painting are trying to demonstrate the 3 times recited Amitabha; painted sound. Zendō is wearing a simple monastic robe, his hands in a prayerful posture, and a strong aura is visible around his head. The silk frame is decorated with gold flowers on a dark background.
