Polychrome Wood Figure of Nichiren

Japan, Kamakura Period 13th Century

Dimensions: 34 cm

Polychrome wood figure of a seated monk, Nichiren. He was a Buddhist priest in the Kamakura period but only after his death (in 1282), he became popular that numerous statues and drawings were made of him, just like this carving. The sutra scroll is missing from his left hand and probably a shakujo from his right.
