The 16th century silver chalice is a remarkable piece of late Renaissance religious art, crafted between 1587 and 1593 by the Spanish silversmith Gregorio de Abaunza. Made in Burgos, the former capital of Castile, it may once have served in the famous Gothic Cathedral of Saint Mary. The silver chalice is 21 cm high and weighs 450 grams, is partially gilded and shows architectural forms favoured since the Middle Ages. It is largely decorated with finely chiselled, carved and chased geometric design. The body is smooth and an ornate volute runs around at the bottom, golden band at the top. The gilding fills the entire interior. Hallmark and master’s mark stamped on the back of the base.
