The Javanese silver Buddha miniature dates back to the 9th – 10th century, after the Brahmanic period, it was made under Buddhist influence. During this time of the reign of Shailendra dynasty the grandiose Borobudur temple was also designed and built in the style of the great Indian temples.
This exquisitely carved silver figure is 4.4 cm high yet impressively sculpted, representing the calm, meditative posture of early Buddhist sculptures. The human figure of Guatama Buddha, a closed-eyed bodhisattva, seated in lotus position. His right hand is in a mudra of giving and wishing and his left hand raised to represent courage and his post-enlightenment stage. The details of Buddha’s dress and facial characteristics exemplify the skills of Javanese craftsmen.
